Improving Your Air Quality

In this increasingly environmentally-conscious world, we all know about the air pollution outside that effects our planet and our lungs. But your mother's advice about going outside and getting fresh air is still true - pollutants can affect the air quality inside your home and make it even worse. Dust, pollen, pet dander, molds, tobacco smoke - it can all contribute to poor air quality, making the air in your home uncomfortable and possibly even dangerous.

Just a few tips on preventing poor air quality:

  • Clean your house regularly to reduce dust, pollen, mold and pet dander in the air.
  • On dry, cool days, open your windows and allow your home to ventillate.
  • Prevent moisture from collecting in kitchens, laundry rooms, and bathrooms. Use exhaust fans to keep them dry.
  • Clean or replace your air conditioning filters frequently.
  • Bring plants into the house. Plants are natural air purifiers.
  • Clean your carpets often, or consider replacing them altogether. Many carpets are treated in chemicals that can add to indoor air pollution. Consider hardwood floors or tile, instead.
  • If possible, do not allow smoking inside your home. Otherwise, restrict it to one room and use open windows and exhaust fans to properly ventillate the room.

Air quality is something you should take into consideration when buying or selling your home. This is the building where you or the next resident will be spending most of their time - it's important to feel comfortable within those walls. Stay alert for stale or stuffy air, unusual odors, humidity, or a lack of air movement. These could all be signs of poor air quality.
