"De-Clutter" Your Home

One of the first things you should do when preparing your house to sell is to de-clutter. It's a difficult but important step. Look at your house and remove anything that isn't absolutely necessary.

Don't know where to start? Try the kitchen. Remove all items off the countertops that you don't use everyday. Remove everything you can, even the toaster. Go to the kitchen cabinets and remove anything that isn't needed. Then get rid of as many things as possible from under the sink. You want potential buyers to see the potential of your cabinet space. If you can empty your cabinets completely, do it! Make it all look open and clean!

Do this with each and every room of the house. Start with the room that buyers will see first and then work your way around. Remove all personal items including pictures, diplomas, collectibles, anything that could distract buyers from the house itself. Don't just put this stuff in a closet or under a bed, get it out of the house completely. Also, remove any extra furniture. You want all of your rooms to look as big and open as possible.

Try to imagine your house as a model home. You want it depersonalized and clutter-free. People should be able to envision themselves inhabiting those walls, so give their imagination as much freedom as you can. Removing the clutter will remove distractions. It will also make the rooms look bigger.

When you're done, take a step back. Did you remove enough stuff? Can you make more space? If you are not sure, invite a friend over to give you an unbiased opinion, or ask your agent.
