How to get your house ready to sell
You'll want to do your best to see the house no longer as your home, but rather as a product to be marketed - this will take some of the emotion out of the sale and help you to see the house through a buyer’s eyes.
Since a well priced home that has been well maintained and one that “shows well” will normally bring a higher price and sell more quickly, your listing realtor should be happy to walk through your house and make suggestions. Some suggestions may include:
- Depersonalize your home. Buyers must be able to envision themselves in the house, so it's best not to have a lot of personal pictures out.
- Put away any valuable collectables. Not only do you not want anything to happen to them, but you don’t want to distract a potential buyer from looking closely at the house itself.
- If you have a lot of clutter, get rid of it. You don’t want your house to feel smaller because of it.
- Pack some things up early and put the boxes in the garage, if you have one. This will also help to make the house feel bigger and will allow the potential buyer some space to visualize their things in the home.
- Make sure your house is fresher, cleaner and better maintained than your competition.
You may want to consider a professional house inspection, so that any potential problems can be taken care of, prior to listing your home.
