Maintaining a "Green" Home
Now, more than ever, we are feeling the impact of humanity on our beautiful planet. One of the biggest effects that we have on our environment is through the homes that we live in. They require a great deal of natural resources to be built and energy to be maintained. Here are just a few of the many things that you can do to make your home more enviromentally-conscious.
10 Steps Toward a "Greener" Home
- Use solar power - They didn't call us the Sunshine State for nothing! Learn how solar power can save you money and help the environment.
- Install energy-efficient products - Many appliances and products now have energy-efficient models that may help to reduce your energy bills.
- Insulate your home - Make cooling and heating your home more efficient by ensuring that your house is properly insulated.
- Install water-saving fixtures - Drought can be a major problem during some parts of the year in Florida. Do your part to conserve water.
- Plant a tree - Not only will you help make the world more beautiful, but trees can effectively shade your home from the hot summer sun. A cooler home is a more energy-efficient home.
- Avoid pesticides - Most pesticides contain highly toxic compounds, which are not only dangerous to the environment, but to you as well.
- Use natural lighting and ventilation - Is that Florida sun shining brightly? Turn off your lights and open the shades. Is it one of those rare cool days? Open the windows and give your air conditioner a much-needed break.
- Seal gaps - Prevent unwanted air from flowing in and out of your house by sealing gaps and cracks.
- Xeriscape - By using indigenous drought-tolerant plants and drip irrigation, you can save on the water consumption of normal irrigation.
- Minimize carpeting - Chemically-treated carpets can add to indoor air pollution. Consider hardwood floors or tile, instead.
