Maximizing Your Space: Part I - Big Changes
Want to make a smaller home seem larger than it is? There are many ways to maximize your space to increase efficiency and create the illusion of more space. These solutions range from extensive remodeling or redecorating to simply rearranging furniture and rethinking a room's use.
Open Up the Kitchen
For many families, mealtimes are social events and the kitchen becomes a family gathering spot. But in a small kitchen things can get cramped and uncomfortable. The solution? Knock down a wall and open your kitchen to the family room or dining room. This will not only increase the feeling of space but it will allow for more social interaction between family members while meals are being prepared and served. It isn't even necessary to knock down an entire wall. Just widening a doorway or adding an opening can greatly improve the look and mood of your kitchen. Just remember, it is important to consult an engineer or contractor to ensure that you are not removing an important load-bearing wall.
The Great Outdoors
Remember, your home doesn't always end at the walls. A small patio or deck can add an extra "outdoor room" to your living space. It provides a good place for relaxing and entertaining. Proper landscaping can provide adequate privacy and add visual beauty to your home. And inside your home, a sliding glass door leading out onto a patio, deck, or backyard can give you more light and make any room seem bigger and more open.
Lighten Up
Have you ever seen a house that just seemed so small it felt cramped and oppressive? Did you notice if the curtains were closed? Sunlight plays an enormous role in making a room seem comfortable and spacious. There are a variety of ways to brighten up a room. Extra windows can be added, or existing windows replaced with larger ones. Perhaps you could add a sliding glass door to your backyard. Skylights can also be a big boost to the amount of light in a room.
