Maximizing Your Space: Part II - Small Changes
Want to make a smaller home seem larger than it is? There are many ways to maximize your space to increase efficiency and create the illusion of more space. These solutions range from extensive remodeling or redecorating to simply rearranging furniture and rethinking a room's use.
Plan Ahead
When planning the decor of your home, think of the entire house as one cohesive unit instead of planning each room separately. Carry wall and carpet colors from room to room. Use texturing instead of drastically different colors for variety. Try to avoid using darker colors for the walls and cabinetry. They soak up too much light and make the room seem closed off and uncomfortable. Light colored walls reflect the light and make rooms more inviting.
Fine Furnishings
Furniture often takes up more space in your home than you realize so it's very important to choose and arrange your furniture carefully to maximize your space. Your focus should be on floor space - especially in the center of the room. Use built-in cabinets and stacking shelves to increase the amount of open floor area and limit the amount of furniture that you use to the necessities. This will make your rooms seem much larger.
It is also important to maintain smooth traffic flow throughout your house. Try to keep doorways and hallways clear of furniture so that your family and guests can walk freely from room to room without feeling hampered.
Using different kinds of furniture can maximize the efficiency of each room. For instance, replacing a full-size bed with a day bed can allow that spare bedroom to also be used as an office.
Mirror, Mirror on your Wall
Adding mirrors can be an easy and cost-effective way to make your rooms appear larger. This increases the sense of depth and can provide some visual interest to your home. This method is especially effective if you can find opportunities to place mirrors in positions where they will reflect the outdoors.
Get Creative With Storage Space
If you don't have enough storage space for all of your possessions, they end up cluttering your home and making it seem smaller. Try to use your storage spaces as efficiently as possible. Don't neglect less traditional storage areas. A storage rack on the back of a door or storage bins kept beneath a bed can save you a lot of space. Try to use your closet space as efficiently as possible. Don't forget that you should be using a closet's height as well as its depth for storage. Use stackable bins to fit more in. In a children's closet, try adding a second clothing bar below the first.
And always remember, if you've done your best to maximize your storage space, the best and easiest way to make your home seem larger is to de-clutter! Go through your knick knacks and bric-a-brac and see what you can get rid of, what you desperately need, and what you will honestly never use again. People need visual space around objects to truly appreciate them so try to de-clutter your home until you can space your possessions out enough to display them proudly.
