Ten miles west of Orlando, nestled between Lake Apopka and Starke Lake, lies the historic city of Ocoee. This city of 30,000 was originally settled by Dr. J. D. Starke, who moved here in the mid 1850s hoping to survive an outbreak of malaria. The pure waters of a nearby lake proved beneficial, and Starke and his followers lived to build the town. Starke Lake—along with the city of Ocoee—became known as the "center of good living".
