Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping is a type of landscaping that uses local, drought-tolerant plants to cut down on supplemental irrigation. Here in Florida, it is often referred to as "Florida-Friendly Landscaping". By following very specific principles in your landscaping, you can have a yard or garden that is not only beautiful, but environmentally-friendly and resource-efficient.

Some benefits of a Florida-Friendly yard

  • Lower water bills - Indigenous plants are meant to survive in Florida's climate and generally require less watering from man-made irrigation systems, saving on water.
  • Less Maintenance Work - Although Xeriscaping can take a lot of work and planning in the early stages, once you have a yard that is properly organized and managed, it will often require less maintenance than a normal yard.
  • Attracts Local Wildlife - A yard of local plants will provide food, water and shelter for much of Florida's diverse wildlife, including birds and butterflies.

Some disadvantages to a Florida-Friendly yard

  • Requires planning - Xeriscaping requires more careful planning than normal landscaping. Plants must be placed to maximize the efficiency of your irrigation system and research must be done to determine which plants go best together.

It should be noted that though some Home Owners Associations may object to the use of non-traditional plants for landscaping, Florida law makes it unlawful for a HOA to prohibit a property owner "from implementing Xeriscape or Florida-Friendly landscape, on his or her land".

Xeriscaping can be a great way to make your home more environmentally-friendly and it can bring Florida's natural beauty right into your back yard. Just be sure to plan your yard out carefully, do your research, and talk to an expert before you decide to undertake such a challenging - but highly rewarding - landscaping project.
